Free Application for Federal Student Aid

Posted by : Andrey & filed under Student Loan Programs

  • If you plan to apply for federal loans and grants to support your college finances, the first step that you need to do is to complete and submit your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form.  This form may be accessed online or may be obtained from your college or university’s financial aid center.  The Department of Education uses this form to evaluate your eligibility to be awarded a federal grant or student loan.

One of the information that the government needs to know through your FAFSA is your level of dependency.  You maybe considered a dependent of your parent if you are unemployed and unmarried.  If you are married, your dependency will depend on other factors. There is a survey in the FAFSA website which you can take to check your dependency level.  In the same manner, the financial aid director or the guidance counselor of your college may also be able to help determine your eligibility.

The first thing to do before filling out your FAFSA is to gather all financial documents that may prove your financial need and inability to finance your college education.  These documents may include the tax returns of your parents, bank statements and other asset declaration documents that your parent may have. If you are married, you will need both your own and your spouse’s tax returns.  You will also need to disclose if you are earning additional income or if you have business investments. Aside from gathering all these documents, you would also have to make sure that you know the deadlines for filing the FAFSA, as this differs from one school to another.

You can then start filling out your FAFSA.  Make sure you give accurate information when filling out this form.  After filling out this form, you can then submit your application online to the FAFSA website. However, you are still required to send a hard copy of your application by mail, if you or your parents do not have a PIN (personal identification number).  To get your PIN, you would need to apply for it at www.pin.ed.gov .  This PIN will allow you or your parent to sign the document electronically.

The Department of Education evaluates all FAFSA received. After assessing your financial status, the evaluation results will be forwarded to your school of choice.  The evaluation results will state your EFC (Estimated Family Contribution) which will help your school decide which of the federal grants and loan programs are you eligible for.  Your school will then contact you to inform you which program you will qualify for.

The FAFSA is the basis used for most federal grants and loans  such as the PELL Grant and the Stafford Loan Program.  In order to get as much financial aid as possible, make sure to check out different federal grants, and loan programs available in your state, and find out information about these programs from  your school guidance counselor or financial aid office.

How To Qualify For A College Athletic Scholarship

Posted by : Andrey & filed under Scholarships

  • Are you one of the many parents whose son or daughter is almost getting ready to enter college?  If you are, then you may also be getting worried about how you can pay for the astronomical cost of a good college education.  Fortunately, there are many scholarships and student loan programs that you can check so you can find the best program that will suit your child’s needs.  One of these programs that you can check is the college athletic scholarship that most colleges and universities offer to deserving students.

If your child is athletic in high school, and has a good record of winning competitions in the field of sports, then he or she will have a good chance of qualifying for a college athletic scholarship.  This scholarship will allow your child to enroll in a good local or national university and play sports at the same time.

A college athletic scholarship is very competitive, and is usually offered to athletic students who are recommended by an athletic recruiter who goes around different high schools, looking for student athletes who show exceptional talents in sports. It is possible, though, that your child may go unnoticed by an athletic recruiter, even though he or she has the potential to be a good sports athlete in college.  You can help put your child in the limelight and be noticed by athletic recruiters, instead of waiting for these recruiters to discover your child’s sports ability.

One way to bring more attention to your child’s athletic potential is to sign up with SportsToSchool, a membership program that allows athletic students and their parents participate actively in the process of qualifying students for a college athletic scholarship. When the founders of SportsToSchool, John Korn and Jennifer Bonoff, who were former college athletes, surveyed different college athlete recruiters, the best advice they got was that high school athletes should be proactive and contact college coaches directly.  SportsToSchool provides the tools that high school students and their parents can use to get the attention of school coaches.

When you sign up for membership with SportsToSchool, you get your own customized website where you can show off your child’s sports and academic achievements, coach recommendations, and contact information.  You will be given access to a database which allows you to contact about 20,000 coaches of about 1,400 universities and colleges around the US.  You are also given templates for letters and even scripts for phone calls which can jumpstart your search for the a good college athletic scholarship for your child.

Qualifying for a competitive scholarship program always boosts one’s confidence.  By helping your child qualify for a college athletic scholarship, you are ensuring a good college education, plus the chance for your child to represent his future college in the sports he or she likes to play most.

Choosing the Right Student Loan Program

Posted by : Andrey & filed under Student Loan Programs

  • A good college education nowadays is often expensive, and for most students who are about to enter college, the task of finding ways to pay for it is a big challenge.  If you are searching for ways to pay your way through college, then consider checking the many loans available for students.  Student loans come in two forms – the federal loans and the private loans.  They differ in that federal loans are extended by the government and its accredited institutions, while private loans come from private lenders and/or non-government organizations that extend loans to deserving students.

Various loan programs fall under these two categories.  Investing time on trying to understand the nature of these programs will be to your advantage, as once you identify the best student loan product for you, you will then have the peace of mind knowing that you can support your way through college.

Most federal loans are need based, meaning, the student’s financial status is evaluated, based on the information gathered from his FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form.  Some of the information needed to fill  up the FAFSA are the student’s family’s total income and assets as well as the number of children who are in the college level, which will help decide the family’s EFC (Expected Family Contribution) or the amount that parents can contribute toward their child’s college education.  The lower EFC the applicant has, the higher the chances he or she will have to qualify for a federal student  loan.

Some examples of federal student loan program are:  the Stafford Loan, the Perkins Loan and the PLUS loan.  Both the Stafford and the Perkins loans provide extended grace periods after the student graduates from college and do not charge prepayment penalties.  The PLUS loan, on the other hand, is extended to both parents of college undergrad students and to graduate students.  This loan charges low interest rates and has a long grace period as well.

There are several private loan programs available to college students, but most of these depend on the student’s credit score.  The student may use a co-signor, oftentimes a parent who will share in the liability of repaying the loan.  One of the most commonly applied for is the Signature Student Loan, which provides low interest rates.

Students who plan to enter trade or technical schools may apply for the Sallie Mae Career Training Loan.  Although this loan is similar to most private student loans because it also takes into account the student’s credit history, this loan may be used to fund a non-traditional education, such as online training.  It may also be used for other expenses aside from tuition costs and offers good repayment terms with no prepayment penalties.

The list of student loan programs available is endless.  You would just have to take the time to research all your options and look for the best one that will give you flexible repayment terms as well as the lowest interest rates possible.  Remember to choose the best loan product that will give you enough time after finishing college to find a job in order for you to pay back your loans.

    Finding Business School Grants

Posted by : Andrey & filed under School Grants

  • If you are pursuing a business career and are looking for financial aid to help you pay your business education, you need to explore different options such as grants and scholarships. There are several scholarship programs available which are usually based on the financial needs and academic merits of the applicant.

Most scholarship programs are very competitive and are based on high GPA (grade point average). Grants are the best options available, because these are funds that you no longer have the pay back after you finish school, and may not necessarily be based on academic performance.

There are two major routes of funding which may help you – grants from schools and grants awarded by the federal government. One of the government programs that provide grants to US citizens is the Pell Grant.  It is a program that is open to financially needy students who wish to pursue their first bachelor’s degree. An applicant must fill up an FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) as accurately as possible as this document becomes the basis for qualification.

You can also check out the Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) which is also a needs based program, like the Pell Grant.  The amount granted to each student differs, as it is based on the student’s financial need.

If your EFC is higher than most students, you will not qualify for any needs based grants, but you may try applying for grants available in the business school where you intend to study. Although most of these grants are also based on the financial needs of the students, they may have other requirements such as academic performance or a good GPA. Like federal grants, these business school grants do not have to be paid back after you get your degree.

There are also business school grants available not just for undergraduate students but also for graduate students. You can find more information about what your school is offering by contacting the school’s guidance counselor’s office.

Whether you are applying for a federal grant or a business school grant, you need to file your FAFSA ahead of time, because most grant programs are highly competitive. Since most of these programs are not highly advertised, you have to exert some effort to look for the right grant that will suit your needs. Finding the best grant package that fits your profile is a challenging task, but one that will open up opportunities for you in the future.

    Grants for Graduate Students

Posted by : Andrey & filed under School Grants

  • There is an increasing number of people who are now returning to school to pursue graduate studies in order to upgrade their professional qualifications. Doing so will give them more opportunities for career growth in the future. However, it is not that easy to go back to school and raise a family, pay bills and work all at the same time. Money and time are the usual problems that a person pursuing graduate studies face. It is a big help that there are several grants available for graduate degree students.

Most colleges and universities that have graduate school programs also have grants for students pursuing their post baccalaureate degrees. If you are a graduate student, it is a good idea to find out what grants are available from the college or university you are enrolled in and apply to as many as possible. Some of these grants will pay for your tuition and other expenses and you may even use the fund to cover a portion of your loan which you needed to support your schooling.

Even for those who are conducting their graduate studies online, there are several grants that can help them cover their expenses. The best source of information for the grants provided by the school you are enrolled in is the guidance counselor’s office who can help you fulfill and submit the requirements needed. On the other hand, if you are pursuing your education online, you can always search the internet for grants that will fit your profile.

Although most of these grants do not have to be paid back, an awardee must follow the standards that these grants require. Because most of these grants are just small amounts, you should try to apply for several grants and target the ones that suit your profile best.

Understanding the Perkins Student Loan Program

Posted by : Andrey & filed under Student Loan Programs

  • One of the most frequently applied for federal loan programs for college students is the Perkins Student Loan Program.  This loan program is designed specifically for students whose families show the least capacity to support their college education, based on information gathered from the student’s Free Application for Federal  Student Aid (FAFSA).  One factor that makes the Perkins Loan Program helpful to most students is its very low interest of 5% or less annually.

Like most federal student loan programs, the Perkins Student Loan Program is awarded based on the financial need of the student.  The student’s family information is reviewed, and the EFC (Expected Family Contribution) is calculated, based on a special formula which determines the capacity of the student’s family to pay for a college education.  Students who come from families with the least EFC are given priorities.

An applicant for the Perkins Student Loan Program should be a US citizen or a permanent resident  who is at least a half-time university or college student.  He or she must display academic excellence and should not have pending loan payments on other federal student loans. Federal funds for the Perkins Loan Program are distributed to accredited schools which decide who are qualified to avail of it.  Once the funds are distributed, they are no longer replenished,  until the next academic year.  This is why a student wishing to apply for the Perkins Loan Program should do so as early as possible, and should complete the application form accurately.

If you qualify for the Perkins Student Loan Program, you will receive the funds in at least two installments within the year.  Your school may either give you the check or just apply the loan amount on your tuition fee bill.  At the end of your college year, you are given an extended grace period (usually nine months) before your first loan payment becomes due.  This is to allow you to be gainfully employed and able to pay your loan installments.

For more information about the Perkins Student Loan Program, contact your guidance counselor, who may have more information about the program.

    Grants for Native American Students

Posted by : Andrey & filed under School Grants

  • There are several ways that you can find financial aid to support your way to college. You can try to search for various grants, scholarships and loans available nationwide on the internet and for sure, you will find several options each with its own set of benefits.  However, comparatively speaking, grants are the ones that provide students the most benefits, primarily because grants are funds that you do not have to pay back.

Native American students can avail of ordinary grants just like any other American student can.  If you belong to any native American tribe, you can also consider other federal grants that may help you complete your education.  You must contact your high school counselor who may advise you on the mechanics of applying for such grants. One thing that you have to make sure is that your name is in the official roll of your tribe.  You need to present proof that you have at least 1/8 Native American blood to make you eligible for grants designed for native Americans.  Be sure to talk with your tribal head before even starting the application process for federal grants for tribes.

There are also grants that are open for students whose fields of study are in areas where native Americans are not well represented, such as education and medicine.  These grants aim to assist more native Americans to enter these fields which may allow them to serve their tribes and communities later. If you are interested in these grants, you may consult the college or university where you intend to pursue your degree and find out how you may avail of these grants.  These grants are always quite competitive, so make sure to apply for these grants as soon as you had already talked with the department in charge of the study you would want to pursue.

Native American students may also avail of any kind of grant that are meant for minorities of different races. For your benefit, you must try to explore the various options open for minority students and send out your applications as soon as possible. One thing that may help you in your search is to visit search engines and type the word “minority” instead of “Native American.” As always, the first step in reaching success in your search for grants is to fill up the FAFSA or the Federal Application for Federal Student Aid as accurately as you can.  This will help establish the fact that you are deserving of financial aid by showing that your Expected Family contribution is too low that your family can not support your college education.

How to Avail of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

Posted by : Andrey & filed under Scholarships

  • There are several scholarship programs funded by the federal government that are awarded based on merit and need. One such program is the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, which was approved by Congress in 1986 as its way of honoring Senator Barry M. Goldwater who dedicated 30 years of his life to the US Senate. This scholarship program is one of the most prestigious in the entire United States and is awarded to deserving students whose fields of study are math, science and engineering.

Unlike most scholarship programs that are awarded to senior high school students, this scholarship program is awarded to sophomore and junior students in college. The program provides a maximum of $7,500 per year to 300 deserving students annually.  Awards are given on the basis of two things. First, the student should show excellent academic performance, as proven by their high GPA. Second, the student should demonstrate that he or she needs financial support to pursue studies in his or her chosen field. The amount of money awarded is based on the applicant’s financial need.

Every year, universities are asked to nominate a maximum of four students who may qualify for the scholarship. Awards are granted based on the decision by the Foundation Board of Trustees which considers the student’s academic performance, interests, career objectives, and chosen field of study. They choose the nominees which have the highest potential to contribute well to their chosen fields in math, science and engineering. The program aims to identify bright minds which may create impacts on these fields and help America retain its leadership in these areas.

If you plan to avail of this scholarship, you should focus on excelling academically on your chosen field. You must take several advanced science and math classes during high school which will strengthen your foundation on these subjects. You should also choose a college or a university which has an excellent math and science program and focus on maintaining a high GPA. Once nominated, you have to explain your motivation in applying for the scholarship, as well as your future plans of helping improve or create an impact on  the field that you had chosen to be a part of.

Since the program is very competitive, and awarding of scholarships is based on the board’s discretion, getting qualified may not be easy.  However, if you focus on your studies and try hard to improve your knowledge on your chosen field of study, you will be increasing your chances of obtaining a scholarship in any federal or private program.

Applying for the Children’s Scholarship Fund

Posted by : Andrey & filed under Scholarships

  • It is true that most of the social problems that underprivileged children face as they grow up stems from the fact that they were not given a better education during their early years.  It is quite unfortunate that these children are not given access to better education because their parents can not afford to send them to better schools. Many of these children could excel academically if they are given a chance to study in a good environment.

It was for the purpose of providing a better opportunity for children that the Children’s Scholarship Fund was created in 1998. Its primary belief is that a good education should start during the formative years of a child and parents should be given assistance to send their children to private schools to get the best quality education possible. Over the years, about 1.25 million children have already applied for this scholarship.

The evaluation procedure followed by the Children’s Scholarship Fund is like that of the Federal School Lunch Program, which takes into account the family size and income of the applicant. Children who are in the kindergarten up to the 8th grade are the only ones qualified to apply for the Children’s Scholarship Fund. Parents who are given assistance to send their children to private schools would have to pay half the cost of their children’s education, since the scholarship pays only a portion of the tuition.

If you are a parent who would like to apply to the Children’s Scholarship Fund, you must visit their website and find their  office branch nearest you. The website link to this office will give you information if any scholarship is being offered. If there is an available scholarship still, you have to pick a private school and then contact the Children’s Scholarship Fund office to ask more information on how to apply.

There is also a regular newsletter entitled, “Required Reading”,  which is released by the Children’s Scholarship Fun regularly. You may find updated information on this newsletter regarding the scholarships available. It also highlights the achievements of students who are recipients of the scholarship and are excelling academically in their chosen schools.

If you are not a parent who is looking for a scholarship, perhaps you would like to be part of the program and assist the fund in providing better educational opportunities to underprivileged children. Since the parent will pay half of the child’s educational expenses, a private donation of $700 for each child will suffice, as the Children’s Scholarship Fund will also match each donation. The amount is just a small price to ensure that today’s children will have access to better education and more opportunities in the future.

How to Avail of the Coca Cola Scholarship

Posted by : Andrey & filed under Scholarships

  • If you are searching for scholarship programs that may help you pay your way through college, you can check out major corporations who usually grant scholarships to deserving students on the basis of their academic performance. One of these corporations is Coca-Cola, who supports over 1,400 students annually through its two scholarship programs.  The best part is the corporation does not require its awardees to be heavy Coke drinkers!

Coca Cola grants scholarships to high school seniors, both those who are home schooled and those who go to traditional schools.  Students who wish to apply should submit their applications between August and October of their high school senior years.  The program is only open for U.S. citizens or legal U.S. residents who attain at least a 3.00 GPA by their junior year in high school.  Immediate relatives of Coco-Cola employees (such as their children or grandchildren) are not qualified to avail of the scholarships.

Every year, the Coca-Cola Scholars Program chooses 250 deserving students and grants them a four-year scholarship based on their scholastic performance.  Initially, about 2,200 students are chosen as finalists from the thousands of applications received nationwide.  These students are required to pass a second application wherein 250 will be called for a personal interview in Atlanta with the National Selection Committee. Finally 50 from the group of 250 will be notified as recipients of $20,000 and the rest will receive $10,000. Qualified students will be notified by mail that they are chosen as finalists and will also be informed of the date of their interview.

Coca-Cola also supports students through the All State Community College Academic Team Program. Students need to be enrolled full time in a community college and be a member of an All-USA or an All-State Academic Team and should be nominated by their authorized school representative in order to qualify. Each state only awards one academic team student every year with $2,000 college financial aid.  Coca-Cola also provides $1,500 to 50 students, $1, 250 to another 50 students and $1,000 for another two hundred deserving students from various states.

Since both grants are very competitive, students should fill in and submit their applications ahead of time. As the grants are awarded on the basis of academic performance, students who are planning to apply for these grants should focus on improving their grades in order to qualify.

If you are interested to apply for these grants, you may visit the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation website which also provides other resources for student scholarships. The company realizes the need for providing information on other college financial aid options to those that do not qualify to their programs, but may do so with others.
